Jackson Hole offers more than stunning landscapes and luxury real estate—it’s also a place where families can create lasting memories together. For those considering relocation or a seasonal home in the area, understanding what Jackson Hole has to offer for children and multi-generational households is an important part of the decision. The region combines outdoor adventure, cultural experiences, and hands-on learning opportunities into a lifestyle that is both enriching and accessible year-round. Here are some of the top family-friendly activities that highlight the unique appeal of Jackson Hole.

Wildlife Watching in Grand Teton National Park

One of the most rewarding and accessible activities for families is wildlife viewing in Grand Teton National Park. From moose grazing near ponds to herds of bison crossing the plains, the park offers an authentic glimpse into the ecosystem of the Greater Yellowstone region. Children love spotting animals from the safety of the car or designated viewing areas, while interpretive signs help explain natural behaviors and habitats.

Family-friendly hikes like the Taggart Lake Trail or the Schwabacher’s Landing Trail offer scenic, low-elevation routes suitable for younger children. Many families make a full day of these excursions, combining a hike, picnic, and wildlife tour into a balanced outdoor adventure.

Exploring the National Museum of Wildlife Art

Located just north of town and overlooking the National Elk Refuge, the National Museum of Wildlife Art is a favorite stop for families. With over 5,000 pieces of artwork and rotating exhibitions, the museum provides both visual inspiration and educational programming.

The children’s gallery includes interactive displays, art stations, and wildlife-themed storytelling sessions. Outside, the Sculpture Trail features large-scale animal sculptures and sweeping valley views, perfect for a short walk with kids or a family photo opportunity.

Outdoor Adventure at Snow King Mountain

Right in the town of Jackson, Snow King Mountain offers year-round recreation for families. In the summer, children can enjoy the alpine slide, mountain coaster, and treetop adventure course. The scenic gondola ride provides expansive views of the valley and access to trails suitable for casual hikes.

During winter, the area transforms into a convenient ski hill with ski school programs for beginners, including those as young as three years old. Night skiing, snow tubing, and on-mountain dining make Snow King a true all-ages attraction no matter the season.

Playtime and Education at the Jackson Hole Children's Museum

The Jackson Hole Children’s Museum is a hub of creative learning and play. Designed for toddlers through elementary-age children, the museum includes themed exhibits like a miniature grocery store, building station, and science lab. Programs range from after-school clubs to seasonal camps, making it a favorite resource for local families and visitors alike.

Whether dropping in for a quick visit or enrolling in a structured program, the museum gives children a fun way to explore new concepts while parents connect with other families in the community.

Scenic Floats on the Snake River

For families who want to experience Jackson Hole’s waterways, a scenic float trip on the Snake River is an unforgettable experience. Unlike whitewater rafting, float trips are calm, guide-led excursions suitable for children as young as four.

These floats typically wind through stretches of the Snake River with views of the Tetons and the chance to spot bald eagles, otters, and even elk from the raft. Some outfitters offer early morning or sunset floats, providing opportunities for memorable wildlife encounters and family bonding.

Horseback Riding and Ranch Visits

Western heritage is an integral part of Jackson Hole, and families can experience it through horseback rides offered by local stables. Many providers have short, gentle rides specifically for children or first-timers, making it a safe and fun introduction to trail riding.

Ranches throughout the area also offer day experiences or overnight stays that include campfire dinners, barn tours, and hands-on activities. These outings provide an authentic connection to the region’s history while creating moments that children will remember for years to come.

Local Parks and Seasonal Activities

Jackson Hole has several public parks that provide space for unstructured play and community engagement. Phil Baux Park, located at the base of Snow King, includes a climbing boulder, playground, and shaded picnic tables. In summer, it’s a great place for kids to unwind after a day of adventure.

In winter, the Teton County/Jackson Recreation Center offers indoor swimming, open gym times, and family-friendly events. The town also hosts seasonal festivals and farmers markets that include live music, food trucks, and interactive booths perfect for children.

Family Living in Jackson Hole

One of the key appeals of Jackson Hole for families is the lifestyle balance. Opportunities for adventure, education, and cultural enrichment are just minutes from residential neighborhoods. Whether attending a museum program after school or heading to the mountains on a weekend morning, the ability to integrate play and exploration into daily life is part of what makes Jackson Hole so appealing.

Families interested in the area will also find that many neighborhoods offer access to trails, parks, and bike paths. Homes with open floor plans, yards, and proximity to schools or ski shuttles are particularly desirable for year-round living with children.

Born in the land of the Delta Blues, Colby Murphy grew up as a nationally ranked cyclist and avid outdoorsman. Colby's addiction for competition took his amateur cycling career through college, capturing silver at the USAC National Championship and a spot on Team USA for the 2013 UCI World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand. While attending Middle Tennessee State University, Colby volunteered coaching youth athletes in addition to interning with the D1 NFL Combine Camp in Nashville, Tennessee. It was freshman year when Colby was exposed to the magic of Jackson Hole. Instantly attracted, he began splitting his time to ski Jackson every year thereafter.

Upon publishing research in the International Journal of Exercise Science and receiving his bachelor’s degree, Colby immediately relocated to Southern California in pursuit of his professional cycling career. Once retired from competition, Colby quickly found himself as a top producing sales professional serving owners of high end luxury real estate in areas of San Diego including Rancho Santa Fe, La Jolla, and Coronado. With his affection for luxury property, history with Jackson Hole, and prior connection to Christie's International Real Estate, Colby saw a clear path and executed a move to Jackson. In his spare time, he now enjoys turning laps at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and giving back at Jackson Hole Therapeutic Riding Association.

Colby is fortunate to have been raised around admirable examples of what drive, tenacity and resilience can yield.
