Best Spots for Stargazing in Jackson Hole

Colby Murphy

Jackson Hole offers some of the clearest, darkest skies in the American West. Thanks to its high elevation, minimal light pollution, and protected landscapes, this area is ideal for stargazing. Whether you're a longtime resident or considering relocating, experiencing the night sky here gives you a deeper appreciation for the natural beauty that surrounds the region. These top stargazing locations provide both accessibility and unforgettable celestial views.

Grand Teton National Park: Stargazing Beneath Towering Peaks

Grand Teton National Park is as impressive after dark as it is during the day. With its vast meadows, open viewpoints, and minimal artificial light, the park is one of the most reliable places to stargaze in Jackson Hole. Some of the most popular spots include:

  • Jenny Lake Overlook: Reflective water and minimal obstruction make this a prime viewing site for constellations and meteor showers.

  • Signal Mountain Summit: This elevated viewpoint provides panoramic views and is ideal for spotting planets and satellites.

  • Snake River Overlook: A favorite among photographers, this quiet location offers both wide sky views and a dramatic foreground of the winding river.
These sites are all easily reachable and offer designated parking, making them accessible for evening outings. It's recommended to arrive just before sunset to set up and allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness.

Snow King Observatory: Elevated Stargazing with Educational Insight

Located at the summit of Snow King Mountain, the Snow King Observatory and Planetarium opened in June 2024 and quickly became one of the area's best stargazing resources. The facility includes a rooftop observation deck, a full dome planetarium, and professional-grade telescopes. Guided stargazing sessions and presentations are available by advance reservation.

The observatory is accessible via the Snow King gondola, which operates into the evening for event nights. This location is ideal for those who want a structured experience led by astronomers. From detailed constellation tours to close-up views of Saturn’s rings, the observatory offers an interactive look at the night sky that enhances your appreciation of Jackson Hole’s natural setting.

Mormon Row and Antelope Flats: Wide-Open Skies with Historic Views

Just north of town, the fields surrounding Mormon Row and Antelope Flats provide expansive views in all directions. With the Teton Range silhouetted against the stars and no artificial lights nearby, this area is especially popular for astrophotography and meteor watching.

The combination of iconic barns, open meadows, and clear skies makes it easy to find a quiet spot to observe. While the area is accessible by car, it’s best to bring a flashlight and plan to stay on marked paths to respect the natural environment.

Signal Mountain Summit and Snake River Overlook

Both Signal Mountain Summit and Snake River Overlook deserve special attention. Their elevation and open orientation offer optimal viewing conditions with little interference. These sites are also ideal for those looking to avoid longer hikes while still getting exceptional stargazing access.

Both locations are within a short drive from Jackson and offer reliable views throughout the summer months.

Togwotee Pass: A High-Elevation Stargazing Escape

Located about 50 minutes east of Jackson, Togwotee Pass sits at over 9,600 feet and provides some of the darkest skies in the region. Its distance from major light sources makes it ideal for viewing the Milky Way and watching seasonal meteor showers. Because of its elevation, cooler nighttime temperatures are common—even in summer—so dressing in layers is a must.

Togwotee Pass is also one of the few places in the area where northern lights are occasionally visible during periods of high solar activity, although sightings are rare and dependent on atmospheric conditions.

Music and Stargazing: Double the Experience

For those looking to combine cultural activities with stargazing, summer concerts at Snow King Mountain and Teton Village often run into the evening. After the music ends, stay a little longer and look up—these venues, especially on clear nights, offer a beautiful transition from live entertainment to natural night shows.

Being able to enjoy music and stargazing from the same location underscores Jackson Hole’s unique blend of culture and wilderness.

Stargazing Preparation Tips

To make the most of your stargazing outings, preparation is key. Here are some essentials:

  • Check moon phases: A new moon provides the darkest sky.
  • Bring a red-light flashlight: It helps you see without affecting night vision.
  • Use a stargazing app: Apps can help you identify constellations and planets.
  • Dress for cool weather: Even summer nights can be chilly, especially at elevation.
  • Respect protected areas: Stay on marked trails and avoid disturbing wildlife.

About the Author

Born in the land of the Delta Blues, Colby Murphy grew up as a nationally ranked cyclist and avid outdoorsman. Colby's addiction for competition took his amateur cycling career through college, capturing silver at the USAC National Championship and a spot on Team USA for the 2013 UCI World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand. While attending Middle Tennessee State University, Colby volunteered coaching youth athletes in addition to interning with the D1 NFL Combine Camp in Nashville, Tennessee. It was freshman year when Colby was exposed to the magic of Jackson Hole. Instantly attracted, he began splitting his time to ski Jackson every year thereafter.

Upon publishing research in the International Journal of Exercise Science and receiving his bachelor’s degree, Colby immediately relocated to Southern California in pursuit of his professional cycling career. Once retired from competition, Colby quickly found himself as a top producing sales professional serving owners of high end luxury real estate in areas of San Diego including Rancho Santa Fe, La Jolla, and Coronado. With his affection for luxury property, history with Jackson Hole, and prior connection to Christie's International Real Estate, Colby saw a clear path and executed a move to Jackson. In his spare time, he now enjoys turning laps at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and giving back at Jackson Hole Therapeutic Riding Association.

Colby is fortunate to have been raised around admirable examples of what drive, tenacity and resilience can yield. His father, a self-made entrepreneur, and uncle, an owner of the Christie's affiliate brokerage in San Miguel de Allende and Mexico City, both inspired Colby's ambitions from an early age.

Now, Colby has positioned himself among some of the most respected networks in the industry. He feels proud and blessed to have established relationships with multiple Christie’s affiliate owners and associates spanning multiple cities, states, and countries. Colby has also recently become a member of REALM™, the first globally collaborative real estate collective designed to empower the real estate professional by curating new relationships and matching qualified buyers based on lifestyle experiences and passions rather than search criteria.

In a market where there are as many agents as annual transactions, Colby represented clients from Australia, the UK, Mexico, and several U.S. states in his first year alone. He applies the principles and work ethic he learned through sport and his impressive circle of mentors to ensure he creates the highest value for his clients. Always elevating, always seeking excellence, his acquired values and attributes provide a successful combination that will ensure your selling or buying experience is a win.
