With its crystal-clear waters, stunning mountain vistas, and abundant trout populations, Jackson Hole fishing promises an unforgettable adventure for novice and seasoned anglers alike.

Let's dive into the fishing adventures awaiting you in the rivers of Jackson Hole.

The alluring waters of Jackson Hole

Jackson Hole boasts several exceptional rivers offering unique characteristics and fish populations.  Understanding these rivers is crucial for planning a rewarding Jackson Hole fishing adventure.

The Snake River

The Snake River is undoubtedly the crown jewel of Jackson Hole fishing. Flowing through the heart of the valley, this iconic river offers some of the best fly-fishing opportunities in the region. Anglers can expect to encounter native cutthroat trout, feisty rainbow trout, and elusive brown trout as they cast their lines amidst the stunning scenery of the Tetons. Whether you're wading in the river's riffles or floating in its tranquil waters, the Snake River promises an unforgettable fishing experience.

The Gros Ventre River

For those seeking a more secluded fishing experience, the Gros Ventre River is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. This scenic waterway meanders through lush meadows, towering cottonwoods, and rugged canyons, providing anglers with a serene and picturesque setting for their fishing adventures. With its abundant cutthroat and rainbow trout populations, the Gros Ventre River offers excellent opportunities for both wading and floating, making it a favorite among local anglers.

Buffalo Fork River

Located east of Jackson Hole, the Buffalo Fork River offers anglers a pristine and secluded fishing experience away from the hustle and bustle of more popular fishing spots. As one of the lesser-known rivers in the region, the Buffalo Fork River provides a sense of solitude and tranquility, allowing anglers to immerse themselves in the beauty of Wyoming's wilderness while casting their lines. Despite its remote location, the Buffalo Fork River is teeming with life, boasting healthy populations of both brown trout and rainbow trout.

The Hoback River

The Hoback River is the perfect destination for anglers looking to escape the crowds and immerse themselves in the wilderness. Flowing through the rugged backcountry of Bridger-Teton National Forest, this untamed waterway allows anglers to catch wild trout in their natural habitat. The Hoback River provides a thrilling fishing experience for those willing to venture off the beaten path with its challenging rapids, deep pools, and rocky runs.

Flat Creek

A smaller stream than the others, Flat Creek offers excellent opportunities for fly fishing. This intimate setting allows anglers to hone their fly-fishing techniques while targeting brown trout, rainbow trout, and brook trout. Anglers can expect to be surrounded by towering mountains, lush forests, and vibrant wildflowers as they cast their lines into the clear, cold waters of the creek.

The Green River

Just a short drive from Jackson Hole, the Green River offers anglers the opportunity to fish one of the most renowned trout streams in the country. Known for its abundant populations of trophy-sized trout, including browns, rainbows, and cutthroats, the Green River promises an exhilarating fishing experience for anglers of all skill levels. Whether you're floating the river's famous A and B sections or wading its scenic banks, the Green River offers endless opportunities for anglers to test their skills and reel in the catch of a lifetime.

The Salt River

Tucked away in Wyoming's Star Valley, the Salt River is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered by adventurous anglers. With its crystal-clear waters, diverse aquatic insect life, and abundant trout populations, the Salt River offers excellent fishing opportunities throughout the year. Whether you're casting dry flies to rising trout or drifting nymphs through deep pools, the Salt River promises an unforgettable fishing experience in a pristine and secluded setting.

Planning your Jackson Hole fishing trip

To ensure a smooth Jackson Hole fishing adventure, several factors require consideration.

Fishing regulations and permits

Before embarking on your fishing adventure in Jackson Hole, it's essential to familiarize yourself with the local fishing regulations and obtain the necessary permits. Wyoming's Game and Fish Department oversees fishing regulations in the state, including catch limits, tackle restrictions, and seasonal closures. Anglers are required to possess a valid fishing license, which can be purchased online or at various retailers throughout the region. By adhering to these regulations and obtaining the proper permits, anglers can help conserve Jackson Hole's precious fisheries for future generations.

Guided fishing excursions

For those looking to maximize their fishing experience in Jackson Hole, guided fishing excursions offer the expertise and local knowledge needed to reel in the big catch. Experienced guides can provide valuable insights into local fishing hotspots, techniques, and strategies, ensuring that anglers make the most of their time on the water. Whether you're a beginner looking to learn the basics or a seasoned angler seeking to hone your skills, guided fishing trips offer a personalized and immersive experience tailored to your interests and preferences.

Fishing gear and equipment

When planning your fishing adventure in Jackson Hole, having the right gear and equipment for the job is essential. Fly fishing is the preferred angling method in the region, with lightweight rods, reels, and lines explicitly designed for casting delicate flies to wary trout. Anglers should also pack a variety of flies, including dry flies, nymphs, and streamers, to match the hatch and target different species of fish. Additionally, polarized sunglasses, waders, and sunscreen are essential items to ensure comfort and protection while fishing in the bright Wyoming sunshine.

Conservation and stewardship

As stewards of Jackson Hole's pristine rivers and fisheries, anglers are responsible for practicing ethical and sustainable fishing practices. This includes practicing catch and release, respecting wildlife and habitat, and leaving no trace while enjoying the great outdoors. By following Leave No Trace principles and adhering to local fishing regulations, anglers can help preserve Jackson Hole's natural beauty.

Jackson Hole fishing offers anglers the opportunity to experience some of the most spectacular fishing adventures in the country. With its stunning scenery, abundant trout populations, and diverse fishing opportunities, Jackson Hole promises an unforgettable experience for anglers of all skill levels. Whether you're casting a line on the Snake River, exploring the remote waters of the Hoback River, or floating the legendary Green River, Jackson Hole's rivers are sure to leave a lasting impression on every angler who visits.

Born in the land of the Delta Blues, Colby Murphy grew up as a nationally ranked cyclist and avid outdoorsman. Colby's addiction for competition took his amateur cycling career through college, capturing silver at the USAC National Championship and a spot on Team USA for the 2013 UCI World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand. While attending Middle Tennessee State University, Colby volunteered coaching youth athletes in addition to interning with the D1 NFL Combine Camp in Nashville, Tennessee. It was freshman year when Colby was exposed to the magic of Jackson Hole. Instantly attracted, he began splitting his time to ski Jackson every year thereafter.

Upon publishing research in the International Journal of Exercise Science and receiving his bachelor’s degree, Colby immediately relocated to Southern California in pursuit of his professional cycling career. Once retired from competition, Colby quickly found himself as a top producing sales professional serving owners of high end luxury real estate in areas of San Diego including Rancho Santa Fe, La Jolla, and Coronado. With his affection for luxury property, history with Jackson Hole, and prior connection to Christie's International Real Estate, Colby saw a clear path and executed a move to Jackson. In his spare time, he now enjoys turning laps at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and giving back at Jackson Hole Therapeutic Riding Association.

Colby is fortunate to have been raised around admirable examples of what drive, tenacity and resilience can yield. Now, Colby has positioned himself among some of the most respected networks in the industry. He feels proud and blessed to have established relationships with multiple Christie’s affiliate owners and associates spanning multiple cities, states, and countries.
