The combination of dramatic Teton vistas, diverse terrain, and well-maintained routes makes Jackson Hole a must-visit destination for outdoor adventurers. This guide unveils the best cycling and mountain biking routes in Jackson Hole, providing insight for riders eager to explore the valley on two wheels.

Paved Pathways: Scenic and Accessible Rides

The Jackson Hole Community Pathway System encompasses over 55 miles of paved trails connecting the town of Jackson to Teton Village and extending into Grand Teton National Park. These multi-use paths are ideal for cyclists seeking leisurely rides with breathtaking views of the Teton Mountains and the Snake River. The trails are well-maintained and suitable for riders of all ages and abilities. Along the way, cyclists can enjoy access to local parks, wildlife viewing areas, and picnic spots, making it a perfect outing for families and casual riders.

Jackson Hole Bike Park: Lift-Accessed Downhill Thrills

The Jackson Hole Bike Park is a premier destination for riders seeking adrenaline-fueled downhill experiences. Accessible via the Teewinot and Sweetwater Gondolas, the park offers a variety of trails for beginners, intermediates, and experts, featuring flow lines, jumps, and technical descents. Riders can enjoy meticulously designed trails that balance excitement with safety, providing both challenge and enjoyment. In addition to downhill trails, the park hosts seasonal events and clinics, making it an ideal spot to refine skills or meet fellow cyclists. Its scenic elevation provides panoramic views of the Teton Range, turning every ride into an unforgettable visual experience. Whether tackling a steep descent or enjoying a smooth flow trail, the Jackson Hole Bike Park combines thrill, community, and natural beauty in one exceptional destination.

Teton Pass: A Challenging Climb with Rewarding Views

Teton Pass is renowned among cyclists for its challenging climb and rewarding panoramic views. The ascent is steep, with an elevation gain of over 2,500 feet, making it a favorite among experienced riders seeking a strenuous workout. The descent offers breathtaking vistas of the valley below, providing a well-earned payoff for the effort. The route is popular among both road cyclists and mountain bikers, offering a mix of paved and dirt trails that cater to various riding preferences.

Shadow Mountain: Flowing Trails with Teton Views

Shadow Mountain offers a network of flowing singletrack trails suitable for intermediate riders. The trails wind through forests and meadows, providing stunning views of the Teton Range. Riders can enjoy a mix of climbs and descents, making it a perfect spot for those looking to experience the natural beauty of Jackson Hole while challenging their skills. The area is also known for its accessibility, with trailheads located just a short distance from the town of Jackson, making it a convenient option for both locals and visitors.

Munger Mountain: Remote Trails for Advanced Riders

Munger Mountain provides a more remote and challenging riding experience for advanced cyclists. The trails here are less trafficked, offering a sense of solitude and immersion in nature. Riders can expect technical terrain, steep climbs, and thrilling descents, making it a rewarding destination for those seeking adventure off the beaten path. The area is also known for its diverse ecosystems, ranging from dense forests to open meadows, providing a unique riding experience that changes with the seasons.

Grand Teton National Park: Iconic Views on Two Wheels

Cycling within Grand Teton National Park offers some of the most iconic views in Wyoming. The multi-use pathways allow cyclists to explore the park's diverse landscapes, from alpine lakes to dense forests, all while being surrounded by the towering peaks of the Tetons. It's a unique opportunity to experience the park's beauty from a different perspective. The park also offers a car-free experience during certain times of the year, allowing cyclists to enjoy the scenery without the distraction of vehicle traffic.

Seasonal Considerations: When to Ride

The best time to cycle in Jackson Hole is during the summer months, from late June to early September, when the trails are typically free of snow and weather conditions are favorable. However, it's important to check trail conditions before heading out, as some areas may still have snow or mud in early summer. Additionally, afternoon thunderstorms are common, so early morning rides are recommended. For those looking to experience the area in a quieter setting, the spring months offer a unique opportunity to ride on car-free roads in Grand Teton National Park.

Trail Etiquette and Safety Tips

Cyclists should adhere to proper trail etiquette to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all users. This includes yielding to hikers and horseback riders, staying on designated trails, and respecting wildlife. It's also important to wear appropriate safety gear, such as helmets and pads, and to carry essential supplies like water, snacks, and a repair kit. Familiarizing oneself with local trail rules and regulations can help prevent accidents and preserve the natural environment.

About the Author

Born in the land of the Delta Blues, Colby Murphy grew up as a nationally ranked cyclist and avid outdoorsman. Colby's addiction for competition took his amateur cycling career through college, capturing silver at the USAC National Championship and a spot on Team USA for the 2013 UCI World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand. While attending Middle Tennessee State University, Colby volunteered coaching youth athletes in addition to interning with the D1 NFL Combine Camp in Nashville, Tennessee. It was freshman year when Colby was exposed to the magic of Jackson Hole. Instantly attracted, he began splitting his time to ski Jackson every year thereafter.

Upon publishing research in the International Journal of Exercise Science and receiving his bachelor’s degree, Colby immediately relocated to Southern California in pursuit of his professional cycling career. Once retired from competition, Colby quickly found himself as a top producing sales professional serving owners of high end luxury real estate in areas of San Diego including Rancho Santa Fe, La Jolla, and Coronado. With his affection for luxury property, history with Jackson Hole, and prior connection to Christie's International Real Estate, Colby saw a clear path and executed a move to Jackson. In his spare time, he now enjoys turning laps at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and giving back at Jackson Hole Therapeutic Riding Association.

Colby is fortunate to have been raised around admirable examples of what drive, tenacity and resilience can yield. His father, a self-made entrepreneur, and uncle, an owner of the Christie's affiliate brokerage in San Miguel de Allende and Mexico City, both inspired Colby's ambitions from an early age.

Now, Colby has positioned himself among some of the most respected networks in the industry. He feels proud and blessed to have established relationships with multiple Christie’s affiliate owners and associates spanning multiple cities, states, and countries. Colby has also recently become a member of REALM™, the first globally collaborative real estate collective designed to empower the real estate professional by curating new relationships and matching qualified buyers based on lifestyle experiences and passions rather than search criteria.

In a market where there are as many agents as annual transactions, Colby represented clients from Australia, the UK, Mexico, and several U.S. states in his first year alone. He applies the principles and work ethic he learned through sport and his impressive circle of mentors to ensure he creates the highest value for his clients.
