The Jackson Hole Rodeo is a cornerstone of the town’s vibrant Western heritage, offering visitors an authentic experience of cowboy culture that has shaped the region for over a century. What began as a gathering of local ranchers showcasing their skills has evolved into a beloved event, drawing crowds from near and far. Each summer, the rodeo becomes a gathering place where locals and tourists come together to celebrate the enduring traditions of the West.

This iconic rodeo is more than just a series of competitions; it’s a window into the life of the American cowboy. From the skilled riders and their powerful horses to the thrilling spectacle of bull riding, every event reflects the spirit of adventure that defines Jackson Hole. Whether you’re vacationing or considering homes for sale in Jackson Hole, WY, the rodeo offers a unique opportunity to witness firsthand the rugged beauty and rich history of the region.

Thrills and spills: Heart-stopping events

The Jackson Hole Rodeo is packed with high-energy events that showcase the rugged talents of local and professional cowboys. The highlight for many is the adrenaline-pumping bull riding, where riders attempt to stay on a bucking bull for eight seconds — an eternity in this intense sport. It’s a spectacle of pure bravery and skill, with cowboys battling not just the bull but gravity itself.

Another crowd favorite is barrel racing, where riders expertly guide their horses through a cloverleaf pattern around barrels at breakneck speeds. The precision and agility required make this event a thrilling watch, as every second counts. Calf roping is another exciting event where cowboys demonstrate their skill with a lasso as they chase down a calf, dismount their horse, and tie it up in a timed competition.

For those seeking more heart-pounding action, bronc riding offers a wild ride as cowboys attempt to stay on a bucking horse while holding on with only one hand. These events embody the spirit of the West and showcase the immense skill, courage, and dedication of the athletes who participate. The Jackson Hole Rodeo provides a front-row seat to these exhilarating competitions, making it a must-see for anyone visiting the area.

Fun for all ages: A family-friendly rodeo experience

The Jackson Hole Rodeo is more than just a thrilling display of cowboy skills; it's a welcoming, family-friendly experience that offers fun for all ages. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, food, and entertainment, creating an atmosphere that makes the rodeo accessible and enjoyable for everyone. The rodeo grounds are filled with the delicious aromas of classic Western fare, from barbecue to funnel cakes, providing families with plenty of food options as they take in the show.

One of the highlights for younger visitors is mutton bustin’, a kid-friendly event where children can try their hand at riding a sheep — a crowd-pleaser that never fails to get laughs and cheers from the audience. The excitement of the rodeo extends beyond the arena, with face painting, games, and opportunities to meet real-life cowboys, giving children a memorable hands-on experience.

About the Author

Born in the land of the Delta Blues, Colby Murphy grew up as a nationally ranked cyclist and avid outdoorsman. Colby's addiction for competition took his amateur cycling career through college, capturing silver at the USAC National Championship and a spot on Team USA for the 2013 UCI World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand. While attending Middle Tennessee State University, Colby volunteered coaching youth athletes in addition to interning with the D1 NFL Combine Camp in Nashville, Tennessee. It was freshman year when Colby was exposed to the magic of Jackson Hole. Instantly attracted, he began splitting his time to ski Jackson every year thereafter.

Upon publishing research in the International Journal of Exercise Science and receiving his bachelor’s degree, Colby immediately relocated to Southern California in pursuit of his professional cycling career. Once retired from competition, Colby quickly found himself as a top producing sales professional serving owners of high end luxury real estate in areas of San Diego including Rancho Santa Fe, La Jolla, and Coronado. With his affection for luxury property, history with Jackson Hole, and prior connection to Christie's International Real Estate, Colby saw a clear path and executed a move to Jackson. In his spare time, he now enjoys turning laps at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and giving back at Jackson Hole Therapeutic Riding Association.

Colby is fortunate to have been raised around admirable examples of what drive, tenacity and resilience can yield. His father, a self-made entrepreneur, and uncle, an owner of the Christie's affiliate brokerage in San Miguel de Allende and Mexico City, both inspired Colby's ambitions from an early age.

Now, Colby has positioned himself among some of the most respected networks in the industry. He feels proud and blessed to have established relationships with multiple Christie’s affiliate owners and associates spanning multiple cities, states, and countries. Colby has also recently become a member of REALM™, the first globally collaborative real estate collective designed to empower the real estate professional by curating new relationships and matching qualified buyers based on lifestyle experiences and passions rather than search criteria.
