Jackson Hole, Wyoming, is a top winter destination for those seeking adventure, pristine landscapes, and unforgettable experiences. Its snow-covered valleys, dramatic mountain peaks, and abundant wildlife provide the perfect backdrop for snowmobiling enthusiasts of all levels. From groomed trails to challenging backcountry routes, the region offers something for everyone looking to explore the winter wilderness. Visitors can enjoy both guided tours and independent rides, ensuring a mix of excitement, freedom, and safety. This guide unveils the best trails, tours, and tips for making the most of a snowmobiling adventure in Jackson Hole.

Togwotee Pass

Togwotee Pass, about 50 miles north of Jackson, is one of the premier snowmobiling destinations in the American West. Sitting at nearly 9,700 feet, the pass receives more than 500 inches of snow annually, ensuring consistently excellent riding conditions throughout the season. With over 600 miles of groomed trails, it accommodates both beginners and advanced riders seeking deep powder and open alpine terrain. The area’s sweeping views of the Teton and Absaroka Mountains add to its allure, making every ride as scenic as it is thrilling. Riders can also enjoy nearby amenities, including lodges, rentals, and guided tours, making Togwotee Pass an ideal base for multi-day snowmobiling adventures.

The Continental Divide Trail System

The Continental Divide Trail System, which runs through the high elevations around Togwotee Pass, offers one of the most extensive snowmobiling networks in the country. With hundreds of miles of well-maintained trails crossing the Continental Divide, it allows riders to experience Wyoming’s rugged wilderness firsthand. The routes vary from wide, groomed paths to more technical sections ideal for experienced snowmobilers. Panoramic views of the Teton Range, dense pine forests, and open meadows provide a constantly changing backdrop. The trail system’s high elevation ensures reliable snow conditions all winter long. For riders seeking a balance of accessibility, adventure, and breathtaking scenery, the Continental Divide Trail System delivers a truly unforgettable experience.

The Gros Ventre Area

The Gros Ventre Wilderness, located east of Jackson, offers some of the most challenging and rewarding snowmobiling terrain in the region. Known for its deep powder, steep ridgelines, and untouched bowls, it’s a favorite among experienced riders looking for a true backcountry adventure. The area’s diverse terrain provides opportunities for both high-performance riding and quiet exploration through wide valleys framed by rugged peaks. Wildlife sightings are common, adding a wild and authentic element to each ride. Because of its remote setting and avalanche-prone slopes, riders are encouraged to carry safety equipment and travel with experienced companions. The Gros Ventre area embodies the spirit of Jackson Hole’s wilderness and adventure.

Yellowstone National Park

Snowmobiling in Yellowstone National Park is one of the most iconic winter experiences accessible from Jackson Hole. During the snowy season, the park’s landscapes transform into a serene wilderness of steaming geysers, frozen rivers, and snow-covered forests. Guided snowmobile tours lead visitors to world-famous sites such as Old Faithful, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, and Mammoth Hot Springs. Along the journey, riders often encounter bison, elk, and foxes navigating the winter landscape. Strict environmental guidelines protect the park’s delicate ecosystem, ensuring responsible exploration. With its breathtaking scenery, abundant wildlife, and geothermal wonders, Yellowstone offers an unforgettable combination of adventure and natural beauty found nowhere else in the world.

Family-Friendly Options

Snowmobiling in Jackson Hole isn't just for adrenaline junkies; it's also a family-friendly activity. Many local outfitters offer tours suitable for families with children. For instance, some companies provide 4-hour tours with departures throughout the day, accommodating passengers as young as six years old. These tours are designed to be both exciting and safe for younger riders, ensuring that families can enjoy the winter landscape together. Family tours often include stops for pictures, snacks, and short walks in the snow to explore the surroundings. These experiences allow children to develop an appreciation for winter sports while enjoying quality time outdoors.

Safety First: Essential Tips

Safety is paramount when snowmobiling in Jackson Hole. Always wear appropriate gear, including helmets, gloves, and layered clothing to protect against the cold. It's advisable to ride with a buddy and carry essential supplies like a first-aid kit, map, and extra fuel. Additionally, always inform someone about your planned route and estimated return time. Familiarizing oneself with avalanche safety and carrying necessary equipment, such as a beacon, probe, and shovel, is crucial when venturing into backcountry areas. Riders should also consider checking weather forecasts regularly, as conditions can change rapidly in mountainous regions. Prioritizing safety ensures a fun and stress-free experience for everyone on the trails.

Best Time to Visit

The prime snowmobiling season in Jackson Hole typically runs from December through March. During this period, the region receives consistent snowfall, and the trails are in optimal condition. However, conditions can vary annually, so it's always a good idea to check weather forecasts and trail reports before planning your trip. Early season snowfalls in December often provide fresh powder, while March offers longer daylight hours for extended rides. January and February typically feature the deepest snow, ideal for backcountry excursions. Visiting during the peak season also means trails are well-maintained and guided tours are readily available.
