Jackson Hole is known for embracing its Western heritage, and the community celebrates this legacy with a wide range of annual events. These gatherings highlight traditions such as rodeo competitions, parades, and cultural showcases that keep the spirit of the Old West alive. For those interested in Jackson Hole Western events, the following descriptions provide a detailed overview of some of the most notable experiences in the area.

Jackson Hole Rodeo

The Jackson Hole Rodeo is one of the longest-standing traditions in the region, held throughout the summer months. Competitions include bull riding, barrel racing, bronc riding, and team roping. Each event demonstrates the skills of professional cowboys and cowgirls, with audiences gathering to cheer on participants under the arena lights.

This rodeo has been part of Jackson’s cultural calendar for decades, attracting locals and visitors. Attendees can expect a structured program, announcer commentary, and a genuine look at Western competition. For many, the rodeo remains the centerpiece of Jackson Hole Western events, symbolizing the area’s enduring connection to ranching culture.

Old West Days Parade

Each Memorial Day weekend, Jackson hosts the Old West Days Parade, celebrating the town’s heritage through decorated floats, equestrian groups, and marching bands. Local businesses and community organizations contribute entries that showcase Western themes and regional pride.

The parade draws large crowds along the downtown streets, creating an atmosphere of celebration. The variety of participants, from classic stagecoaches to local musicians, reflects the event’s community-wide involvement. This parade sets the tone for summer and highlights the area's creativity and traditions.

Stagecoach Rides and Demonstrations

Stagecoach rides and demonstrations during special festivals add an interactive element to Jackson Hole Western events. Visitors can also experience horse-drawn transportation along designated routes near Town Square, which shows how people traveled in the region’s early days.

In addition to rides, demonstrations often explain the craftsmanship behind harnessing teams and maintaining stagecoaches. These experiences connect to the past and help preserve a form of transportation that shaped Jackson’s history.

Jackson Hole Shootout

The Jackson Hole Shootout is a long-running evening performance staged on Town Square during the summer. Local performers reenact a Wild West shootout with scripted storylines, costumes, and choreographed action. The production draws large audiences, and many plan their evenings around it.

This event holds the distinction of being the longest continually running shootout reenactment in the United States. Its consistency and entertainment value make it one of the defining Western traditions of Jackson, appealing to visitors who want an engaging historical spectacle.

Teton County Fair

The Teton County Fair combines agricultural exhibits, carnival rides, and rodeo-style competitions. Held in late summer, the fair offers a full schedule of livestock shows, horse events, and arena contests highlighting the region’s ranching traditions.

Food vendors, music, and midway attractions add to the fair’s appeal. While it is a county-wide event, the Western competitions anchor its programming, making the fair a strong representation of the area’s cultural identity.

Cowboy Poetry Gatherings

Cowboy poetry gatherings in Jackson Hole focus on oral traditions that reflect the lives and experiences of ranchers and cowhands. Performers recite poetry, share songs, and tell stories that capture the humor, struggles, and pride associated with Western life.

These events offer audiences insight into a cultural form that continues to thrive in rural communities across the West. By combining performance and heritage, cowboy poetry gatherings deepen the appreciation of Western culture beyond rodeo arenas and parades.

Elkfest and Antler Auctions

Elkfest, held in May, centers on the famous antler auction and incorporates Western-themed programming. Outdoor gear sales, local food, and live entertainment complement the main auction, creating a festival environment tied closely to Jackson’s traditions.

While Elkfest is primarily focused on wildlife and conservation, its cultural elements often emphasize the town's Western identity. This blend of commerce, community, and heritage makes Elkfest a unique addition to the annual lineup of Jackson Hole Western events.

Western Music Performances

Music plays a central role in Jackson’s event calendar. Concerts featuring Western swing, country, and folk are frequently included in summer festivals and town gatherings. Performances occur in venues ranging from outdoor stages to local bars with historic reputations.

These musical programs celebrate both traditional and contemporary Western genres. For attendees, the concerts provide a chance to enjoy live entertainment while connecting to the region's cultural backdrop. Western music continues to reinforce Jackson's identity as a hub of cowboy heritage.

Born in the land of the Delta Blues, Colby Murphy grew up as a nationally ranked cyclist and avid outdoorsman. Colby's addiction for competition took his amateur cycling career through college, capturing silver at the USAC National Championship and a spot on Team USA for the 2013 UCI World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand. While attending Middle Tennessee State University, Colby volunteered coaching youth athletes in addition to interning with the D1 NFL Combine Camp in Nashville, Tennessee. It was freshman year when Colby was exposed to the magic of Jackson Hole. Instantly attracted, he began splitting his time to ski Jackson every year thereafter.

Upon publishing research in the International Journal of Exercise Science and receiving his bachelor’s degree, Colby immediately relocated to Southern California in pursuit of his professional cycling career. Once retired from competition, Colby quickly found himself as a top producing sales professional serving owners of high end luxury real estate in areas of San Diego including Rancho Santa Fe, La Jolla, and Coronado. With his affection for luxury property, history with Jackson Hole, and prior connection to Christie's International Real Estate, Colby saw a clear path and executed a move to Jackson. In his spare time, he now enjoys turning laps at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and giving back at Jackson Hole Therapeutic Riding Association.

Colby is fortunate to have been raised around admirable examples of what drive, tenacity and resilience can yield.
